About Blessings

Center Line Public Schools started the distribution phase of its Blessings in a Backpack on November 2, 2012 with 100 children enrolled in the program; as many as 126 elementary school children were enrolled in the program.

What Is Blessings in a Backpack?

Blessings in a Backpack is a results-oriented program.  This unique program is designed to feed school children whose families qualify for the federal Free and Reduced Price Meal program, and have little to no food on the weekends.
Every Friday, students receive their backpacks with staples that require minimal preparation.  They return to school on Monday ready to learn.  $80 feeds a child on the weekends for a 38 week school year.
Blessings in a Backpack is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization currently feeding over 57,000 children in 498 schools in 41 U.S. states and three other countries.  The program is a hybrid of private sector funding and public partnership carried out in public schools.  We are feeding the future of America, one school at a time.

Typical Backpack Food Items

The backpacks include ready-to-eat food items such as granola bars, instant oatmeal, macaroni and cheese, juice pouches, applesauce, pasta rings, etc.  Blessings in a Backpack reviews its standard menu with a nutritionist annually to make sure the food is kid-friendly, nutritious, non-perishable, and easy-to-prepare.  Please be aware, most of these kids live in a world where some food is better than no food.

The Results:

Nourished Kids Ready to learn

Students who participate in the Blessings in a Backpack program show marked improvement in school attendance, test scores, behavior, and health.  Food is an essential building block, and in this case truly is a blessing, especially to a hungry child!
